Border Czar Tom Homan announced the intention to contact hundreds of county sheriffs across the United States to use their jail facilities to house thousands of undocumented immigrants. Homan mentioned that he is exploring contracts to rent beds at a reduced price, as the federal government currently has about 30,000 detention spaces, insufficient to carry out a large-scale deportation project.

In a statement made at the White House, Homan emphasized that the most expensive beds belong to the federal government of the United States. He indicated that the Trump administration is considering the offer from Republican Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, to provide detention spaces in his state along with 14,000 square feet of land for the undocumented.

Homan assured that Abbott's proposal is being evaluated, as well as offers from other sheriffs across the country, with the goal of gathering as many beds as possible to meet detention and deportation targets. He acknowledged that an extraordinary budget from Congress will be needed to reach the figure of at least 100,000 immigration detention spaces requested by the government.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, accusing them of obstructing the activities of immigration authorities. The Trump administration seeks to revoke existing state and local protections that safeguard the undocumented population from deportation.
